Fifty years ago, the youth of Soweto stood against an architecture of erasure, they did not just demand to learn; they demanded the right to know—to know that their existence was not a peripheral matter to be managed, but the central narrative to be lived.
At the Monyana Literary Foundation, we recognize that the struggle has evolved from the streets into the mind. Our mission remains an echo of 1976 – to ensure that the voices once silenced are not only heard but equipped with the tools to build their own stories. Education is the rigorous, often invisible work of dismantling the silence that survives long after the laws have changed. We therefore envision that our foundation will play a significant role in the next decade of South African education & literacy.
We honor the young people of then – we honor them by ensuring that the young people of today can map toward dignity.
The pen remains our most potent instrument of liberation. Let us continue to write the future they began.
Sincerely,
Monyana Kgomanyane
